    EDITORS UPDATE:

Following the departure of PokerStars, PartyPoker, Americas Cardroom, Bovada and BetOnline, the only major online poker room operating in Australia is Ignition Casino Poker.

I was quiet surprised to read this morning that real money poker apps have been removed from the Apple iTunes App Store and Google Play market in Australia. This government ban on mobile gambling apps has come as quiet a surprise to many. I know PokerStars and 888 have obliged by removing their respective apps but I'm wondering if any of the other web based poker sites will continue to offer real money mobile poker games to Australian players? Here is the full story http://au.ibtimes.com/articles/490725/20130716/apple-app-store-poker-gambling-interactive-act.htm

    Hey Donald

Although the Australian authorities have been able to get real money poker apps, such as PokerStars and 888, removed from the Apple App Store and Google Play markets, they will find it much more difficult to prevent Australian citizens from playing at web based mobile poker rooms. We've contacted the following poker rooms and they've confirmed that they are still accepting real money iPhone, iPad, Blackberry, Nokia and Windows Phone poker players from Australia.

    TERMINAL POKER - CLOSED

Terminal Poker are a turbo poker room that offer high speed poker similar to PokerStars Zoom. They also offer one of the busiest Texas Hold'em and Omaha tournament schedules, with new tournaments kicking off every few minutes. The best thing is their mobile client work on virtually every try or browser, whether you are using a desktop, a Samsung Galaxy, a Blackberry Z10 or a Nokia Lumia.

PARTYPOKER MOBILE - NO AVAILABLE IN AUSTRALIA

Party Poker offer Texas Hold'em and Omaha real-money ring games on 99% of smartphones and tablets. They're also one of the fishiest mobile poker sites, so if you're looking to quickly increase your bankroll, this is the Android poker room for you. They also offer ALL new players a £5 no deposit bonus.

If anyone else has suggestions for Australian friendly real money poker apps, please let us know.

    Awesome, thanks.

If you already have poker apps installed on your iOS or Android phone or tablet in Australia, will they continue to work following the ban?

Yes, I think the poker apps will still work if you have them installed on your phone. Problems may arise when you need to update the software at a later date though. Some poker rooms do not allow you to login and play unless you are using the latest version of their poker client.

The South Australian Government has now also published a watch list of gambling apps to help parents protect their children. The move follows new studies which show that children who are exposed to gambling type games at an early age, are more likely to develop a gambling problem when they get older.

The list will be posted on forums so that parents can comment on specific games and add to the list. Parents are encouraged to check which apps are installed on their children's phones or tablets to make sure they are not developing gambling tendencies at an early age.

Most bookmakers, casinos and poker rooms now seem to be favoring web based gambling apps over App Store and Google Play apps. They cost less to develop and you don't have the headache of getting them approved after. This whole Australian initiative is probably well meaning but prohibition simply doesn't work. Even though both online and mobile gambling is illegal in the United States, there are still plenty of poker, casino and betting websites that accept US gamblers.

Android users should be largely unaffected by any attempt to ban cash games poker apps in Australia since these apps are not available in Google Play anyway. Users of Samsung Galaxy, HTC One or Google Nexus devices can simply download the poker software directly from the online poker rooms website.

Over the past few months Bet365 have released a poker app that can be played from the browser of any Android smartphone or tablet. A native version is also available as an apk file, which can be downloaded from the Bet365 website.

Why don't australian bookmakers like SportsBet also offer casino and poker games? Online sportsbooks in other countries tend to do a lot more than just sports betting.

Many politician think that gambling is a big problem in Australia. As a result there are very strict laws surrounding online gambling in Australia. For example, until recently online bookmakers were now allowed to offer a live betting service so there is now way they will be allowed to add slots, blackjack or other casino games to their Android or iPhone apps.

While online gambling in Australia is hugely popular, the government are quiet draconian when it comes to imposing restrictions on Aussie bookmakers and poker rooms. For instance, they recently outlawed in-play betting on bookie apps. Offering poker and casino side games is also prohibited unfortunately.
