Is money won at bitcoin gambing sites taxable in the USA?

If I win a large amount of bitcoin playing poker or sports betting, do I still have to pay income tax on it? What is the IRS position on bitcoin at the moment? Is it considered a currency or just some weird nerd money that they don't care about?
