I noticed over the weekend that a number of my mates had started placing bets using "Text Betting" and I was wondering what others thought about this?

It seems pretty easy to just login to one of the bookmaker apps on my HTC One M8 and place a bet so I'm curious to find out why anyone would bother placing wagers via text message? Despite this I'd like to give it a try so can anyone recommend a particular text betting service or are they all the same?

We've had a look at the various bookmakers currently offering text betting and found that they all differ a little so we've put together a summary below of each one.

    PADDY POWER MESSENGER - WWW.PADDYPOWER.COM
    • To use the Paddy Power text betting service on iPhone you need to download either their iOS Messenger app from the iTunes App store or the Android app from their site.
    • Place rapid bets using simple text instructions like £25 win Bobs Worth or 10 Double Liverpool, Lord Windermere.
    • If you are a fan of a particular horse or maybe a jockey like Barry Geraghty or Ruby Walsh, you'll get a text reminder before their next race.
    • Get commentary text messages to keep you up-to-date on particular English Premier League football matches.
    • Cutomize the app so you only receive the type of message you want to receive.
    • Check your account balance, withdraw your winnings, request odds and much more via Paddy Power Messenger.
    • Place a £10 text bet and PP will give you a free bet worth £20 the first time you use the app.

So how are these bets processed? Is there a call center type place where actual humans place your bets or is it totally automated?

Most of the odds requests and bets are automatic but I think there is also some humans working in the background for trickier bets. The Paddy Power Messenger app is the most sophisticated because it does a lot more than just straight text betting. Watch the video demo below....

The PaddyPower text betting app is the best in my opinion but obviously you need to have a more smartphone like a HTC One, Samsung Galaxy or iPhone in order to use it. If you're still using a Nokia or BlackBerry then you'll need to use Ladbrokes or William Hill because you don't need to download on app. You simply text your bet to a specific number like regular messages.

The text betting app from PaddyPower is great but it may not be for everyone. If you're just interested in placing the occasional wager on a horse race or football match then the service from William Hill or Ladbrokes might be more straightforward. It's worth downloading the PP Messenger app if you're also interested in getting notifications and commentary on particular sports.

These services have save my bacon on a couple of occasions when I haven't been able to get an internet connect. Even with a very weak signal it's still possible to send a text bet and Ladbrokes guaranteed that you'll get the best price on any UK or Irish horse race.

is there just one text number for all countries so does it depend on where you live? i live in ireland so do i need a different number to someone in england or scotland?

Yes the phone numbers change depending on which country you are based in. For instance, if you want to place a text bet with Ladbrokes in the Republic of Ireland, you need to use the number 51520, while in the UK the number is 60043.

I presume that this is one of the major reasons PaddyPower chose to develop a messenger app because you don't need to remember a particular number. It will also work from any country providing you have an internet connection so even if you are on holidays in France or Italy you can still place a quick text bet.

if you place a bet using one of the text betting services, can you still opt to cash out later from the bookmaker app if you think a game isn't going your way?

Yes. Once you've placed a bet via one of the text betting services it will appear in your betting slip like a normal bet. If if the "Cash Out" option is available on that particular sporting event you will be able to close the bet early via your phone or tablet.

there was a time when mobile bookmaker sites were a little cumbersome and it might take you a long time to find the betting market you want and then place a bet. modern bookie apps are far more intuitive and allow you to bet in just a couple of clicks so i really don't see the point of text betting.

They are really useful if you have poor network coverage and want to place a bet. Sometimes at remote racetracks it can take forever to place a bet using an app with a weak signal. With text bet you can take a punt with virtually no coverage.

Do any of the United States online sportsbooks offer text betting for either sports or horse racing?
