BetOnline has long been one of out favourite United States friendly online and mobile sportsbook. do any of the other major players in the US market like 5dimes or Bodog accept bitcoin?

5dimes has recently added Bitcoin to their funding methods. The service is available daily from 9am to 11pm and is free for both deposit and withdrawals. Unfortunately, they don't yet have an app.

We've checked with a bunch of other US-facing sportsbooks, including Bovada, GTBets and BetDSI, but none of them are Bitcoin ready.

It depends on the bookmaker or poker room. With BetOnline you can request a payout without having made a deposit using bitcoin.

what about the identity verification process? if i'm just depositing and withdrawing using bitcoin will i still need to provide them with a copy of my passport and bank statements?

Since BetOnline is a regular online sportsbook rather than one of the new gambling sites that only accept bitcoin, they will require you to prove your identity before they can process your payout.

can i buy bitcoin with my credit card or paypal?

That depends largely on where you live. If you live in the USA then you should be able to buy bitcoin using your Visa or Mastercard with Coinbase providing you go through their identity verification process. It's possible in other countries, although it is more tricky. The best place to find information on this is Bitcoin.org.

can anyone recommend a bitcoin wallet for gambling? coinbase and circle seem to be the most popular wallets at the moment.

Both Coinbase and Circle are web-wallets so you are entrusting these companies to keep your bitcoin safe. We could recommend that you look after your own private keys and manage your bitcoins yourself. The best Android bitcoin wallet right now is Mycelium, while the best bitcoin wallet for iPhone has to be Bread wallet. Both are free and can be found on Google Play and the iTunes App Store.

Making a deposit is free. In comparison you will lose about 4.8% of your deposit when you use a Mastercard or Visa.

Wallets are always free to use but there is a bitcoin network fee when you send bitcoin. The fee typically ranges from 2 to 10 cents.

Exchanges do charge a fee. It can be as high as 1% but if you shop around you can find significantly lower fees.

BetOnline are pretty good for free bets anytime of the year. For instance, if you wager in-play for the first time on any American Football game they will give you a free play of $25. Place an NFL bet from your Droid, iPhone or Lumia for the first time and you get a matching free-play bet up to $50.
