I recently did some web development work and got paid in Bitcoin for my time. Rather than cashing out I'd like use the virtual currency to play some online poker. Unfortunately, none of the major players like PokerStars or PartyPoker accept Bitcoin so I've come to a dead-end. Can anyone recommend a reputable mobile poker room that accepts Bitcoin?

I'm looking for a bitcoin poker site that works on either an iPad or Samsung Galaxy Note. I'd also be interested to hear any good or bad experiences people have had gambling with bitcoin.

    Hey Jake

I'll be the first to admit that I know very little about Bitcoin so maybe someone else on this forum will be able to give you better information. I do know that you need to be careful when selecting a Bitcoin betting site because many of them are new, with very small player bases so it's difficult to say with any certainty how long these companies will be in operation. Unfortunately, right now none of the big brands like Full Tilt, PartyPoker or PokerStars accept Bitcoin.

IMHO these are the two best Android bitcoin poker apps.

    NITROGEN BTC POKER - WWW.NITROGENSPORTS.EU
    • United States citizens can play bitcoin cash games at Lucky Flop.
    • Compatible with smartphones, tablets, Macs and PC's.
    • Play Texas Hold'em or Omaha cash games or compete in a free roll, Sit N Go or scheduled tournaments.
    • The Nitrogen Sports web app is browser based so you don't need to download or install any software.
    • Play instantly and anonymously without providing any personally identifiable information.

    IGNITION POKER BTC - WWW.IGNITIONCASINO.EU
    • Ignition is an online poker site EXCLUSIVELY for U.S. players.
    • They accept bitcoin, credit cards, bank transfers and every other major
    • Using bitcoin is completely free at Ignition. If you opt to deposit using Visa, Mastercard etc. there will be a fee.
    • When Bovada Poker closed they took over their player pool so they are one of the largest U.S. facing poker networks.
    • Their mobile poker software works on everything from Android to iPhone and Windows Phone/Lumia.
    • Bitcoin deposits are instant. BTC payouts can take up to 3 days.

BETCOIN BTC MOBILE POKER - WWW.BETCOIN.AG
    • The best bitcoin poker app for iPhone, Android or Windows Phone gaming.
    • Play for real-money in the U.S. or any other country in the world.
    • Play instantly from your smartphones browser without the need to download/install.
    • Hold'em/Omaha cash games and tournaments (scheduled and Sit N Go).
    • Casino games with live dealers also available.
    • Part of the medium traffic Elec Games poker network.

Switch Poker (Switch Poker have stopped accepting bitcoin) have been around since the early days of mobile poker and they have an excellent reputation for fairness and fast payouts so your money will be secure. The downside is the Switch Poker iOS and Android client only offers Texas Hold'em ring games. No fast fold poker or tournaments are available.

(UPDATE: 20 Feb, 2015. Seals With Clubs has closed) If you are a resident of the good old USA then Seals With Clubs is the only U.S. friendly poker site that accepts real-money players from the U.S.

I'd like to give a bitcoin poker room a try but I've been told it's pretty complicated to acquire bitcoin. Can I buy them them anywhere using my American Express or PayPal account?

I know you definitely can't buy them with PayPal because PayPal consider Bitcoin to be competition. Anytime a company tries to use PayPal to sell Bitcoin they get their account shutdown almost immediately.

One of the biggest impediments to Bitcoin is not being able to buy the currency using your credit card or PayPal account. Obviously it's in the best interests of Visa, Mastercard and PayPal to try and slow the rise in popularity of the currency as much as they can. If Bitcoin can somehow manage to solve this problem it will become far more popular.

a number of companies now allow users to buy bitcoin using credit cards. i think this will make bitcoin much more popular because at the moment it's a little difficult to purchase the crypto-currency. i guess it's understandable that companies like visa and mastercard would not like another payment system entering the market that they dominate.

According to an announcement on their website, Seals With Clubs has now shut-down due to security concerns. They took the site offline on February 11 because they believe that the site "now operates in a perpetual state of jeopardy". This is bad news for any Bitcoin poker players in the United States as Seals With Clubs was the only Bitcoin mobile poker site to welcome real money players from the USA. Sad news but I'm sure we haven't heard the last from these guys.

Yes, they have relaunched as SwCPoker.eu but right now they only offer a PC client. There is no word on when or if a mobile poker client will be made available. The Chairman made a short (and rather stupid) statement in the video below .

has anyone played mobile poker using the betcoin app?

Yes. BetCoin is quiet a good option for bitcoin poker because it is part of the relatively busy Winning Poker Network so it shares the same player pool as Americas Card Room, Black Chip Poker and BetDSI. You'll find plenty of action at the Omaha and Hold'em tables and tournaments are quiet busy too. BetCoin is a good option if you're planning to play bitcoin poker on your desktop. Unfortunately because the software was developed using flash, you can't play it using the Chrome or Safari browsers of your Android or iPhone. Instead you'll need to download the Puffin browser that supports flash games and is free to use. betcoin is one of the best bitcoin poker sites. they offer a good variety of hold'em, omaha and omaha hi/lo pot limit and no limit variants.

they run lots of freeroll tournaments daily if you'd like to test the software without risking your bitcoin.

I've been waiting for nearly 4 months for CarbonPoker to process my withdrawal. Does anyone know how quickly you can withdraw your bankroll from BetCoin?

Payouts are virtually instantaneous at BetCoin which means the bitcoin is usually in your wallet within and hour or two.

the nitrogen sports mobile poker client is pretty good also. it's not part of a big network like betcoin so it doesn't have quiet as much traffic but it's not flash based so you can play it on any chrome or safari browsers. they run hourly freeroll tournaments too in addition to sit n go's and multi-tables.

Why can't I download bitcoin poker apps from Google Play? Since bitcoin isn't an official currency why do they consider it gambling?

Who says it's not an official currency? You should open a bitcoin sportsbooks or casino in the USA and see how long it takes before they throw you in jail.

is fortune jack poker available on smartphones?

FortuneJack poker is Flash-based so that would depend on what type of phone you own. If it's an iPhone then it's not going to work. If you have a Flash enable Android then it may work. Just remember that the software is designed to work on desktops so playing on a phone might be a little tricky. It's probably best to wait until they develop a HTML5 version.
