Can anyone tell me if it is legal to use sports betting or casino apps in the U.S.? I know that Google do not allow them in Google Play in the States which makes me a little nervous. Will I get in trouble for using these apps?

    Hi Donald,

A new United States friendly betting app has been released by Bovada U.S. Mobile Sportsbook that combines sports and horse race betting, a real money poker app and a wide variety of iPhone/Android casino games. Here are a few more deals...
    • The Sportsbook App is very well designed and features in-play betting, parlays and more. All U.S. sports and leagues are covered such as the NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL. You can also place mobile bets on soccer, golf, tennis, politics, surfing, cycling, snooker, rugby union and more.
    • The Horse Race Betting section of the app covers all horse races in the United States. Get the starting price plus detailed information on the jockey, trainer, going and each horses racing form.
    • Mobile Casino Games - Just click on the apps casino tab and you'll be able to choose from about two dozen slots, roulette, blackjack and other casino games.

And the best part is that all of these elements are integrated into one app, making it easy to switch between each section whenever you feel like it.

Unfortunately, Bovada no longer offer mobile poker to their United States customers. US poker players can find a real-money Texas Hold'em app for iPhone and Android over at Ignition Casino - IGNITIONCASINO.EU

Well PokerStars and Full Tilt have been in court all week thrashing out a deal with the D.O.J. I think everyone is keeping their fingers crossed that they will be able to come to some kind of settlement that might pave the way for the return of online poker in the States.

Even if PokerStars and Full Tilt do come to some agreement with the United States government, I can't see them being granted a gambling license in the United States for at least 5 to 10 years. If they were allowed to re-enter the U.S. market any sooner it would send out the message that breaking the rules just gets you a slap on the wrist and a fine.

The Leroys sportsbook app can be downloaded legally right now in the United States but they'll make you jump through a whole lot of hoops before you can use it and even then it is only available inside the state of Nevada.

I'm guessing gambling apps for both iOS and Android will be phased in, in a state by state basis.

    Hi Guys

If you are from the United States and would like to play real-money poker, blackjack, slots or roulette on your iPhone or Android then we've got some good news. Over the past couple of months a couple of mobile Texas Hold'em and casino games have been released that welcome gamers from the USA.

If you want to play poker on any mobile device then you should read this post on the latest Carbon Poker app or this post on Drakes U.S. iOS and Android casino apps.

It was always my understanding that online gambling wasn't illegal in the United States, it was only illegal to use the banking system to deposit or withdraw funds from sportsbooks, casinos or poker rooms.

Now that Bitcoin has taken off, I'm wondering if it is completely legal to use this to fund your gambling accounts?

Bitcoin definitely has huge potential for the online gambling sector, particularly in countries like the United States where there are anti-gambling regulations. The problem is the value of Bitcoin fluctuates so wildly that it may put off some users. When the Silk Road was shut down for instance, Bitcoin lost $500 million. It did recover but these kind of wild fluctuations in value will deter the casual user.

I can see the value fluctuations putting off a lot of poker and sports betting gamblers but I don't think it will be an issue for casino gamers. Poker and sports betting are largely games of skill so I think those type of gamblers are quiet risk averse. If you like risking your money playing games like roulette then Bitcoin will just be another way to gamble for you.

I'm no legal eagle but I don't think online or mobile poker is illegal in the US. It has always been my understanding that it is illegal for U.S. financial institutions to facilitate transfers of funds from players to poker rooms but it's not illegal to actually play online poker. Despite the closure of Full Tilt and PokerStars withdrawal from the U.S. market, online poker is still very popular in the U.S. and I haven't heard about anyone being prosecuted for playing.

Online gambling is now legal in many parts of the USA including New Jersey, Atlantic City and Nevada. Sadly it hasn't been as successful as many of the States had hoped it would be.

Playing at legal poker rooms in the US just isn't worth the effort. The player base is too small, the prize pools are tiny and it's nearly impossible to deposit money using either a Visa or American Express. Much easier play at one of the U.S. friendly offshore poker sites.

Bovada (US) and Bodog (Canada) have upgraded their mobile software to now offer Omaha and Texas Hold'em cash games. Previously you could only play fast fold poker games on phone so this is a welcome update. Since it's an "Instant Play" app that is installed through a browser, the Bovada mobile poker app works on iPhone, Windows Phone Lumia, iPad and any type of Android device, including models by Samsung Galaxy, Sony Xperia, Google and Motorola.

Bodog was my favorite online poker room back when they accepted players from Europe. It was always a great site for soft competition so I was disappointed when they stopped allowing real money gamblers from outside the United States and Canada. Hopefully they can get a license to operate in the UK and Ireland again because I'd love to their new mobile poker site.

Bitcoin is growing increasingly popular as a payment method for online gambling. For one you don't have to pay the ridiculously high processing fees charged by credit card companies. The other major benefit is that Bitcoin is anonymous, which might be attractive to gamblers based in the US where online gambling is illegal in certain states. BetOnline are one of the top US friendly poker rooms, bookmakers and casino and they've now also begun accepting that crypto-currency for deposits and withdrawals. Their app will work on any iPhone or Android and you'll find download and install instructions here.

What about apps like Draft Kings who masquerade as a skill based game when they seem to be just another gambling site. I surprised these fantasy sports apps where you can win cash haven't been shut down in the USA.

Yeah I'm surprised that more states have banned Fan Duel and Draft Kings and even more surprised that you can download their native apps from Google Play and the App Store on iTunes. Both of these companies have received a lot of venture capital money so maybe they've been able to stifle political opposition with generous donations.

If I was a regulator or law maker in the USA I'd be worried about these bitcoin sportsbook apps that can operate without the help from American banks or credit cards.

Where in the US right now is it legal to gamble? Nevada, New Jersey, New York?
